Why Do Some Wax Melts Stop Smelling?

You set up your wax warmer, dropped in a fresh cube, and waited. But the scent barely came through — or disappeared after an hour. Sound familiar?

This is one of the most common questions we get at Scents by Shaizy. The good news: it's usually not the wax melt. Here's what's actually going on.

1. Nose Blindness (The Most Common Culprit)

Your brain is incredibly good at filtering out constant background information — including scent. After 20–30 minutes in a scented room, your nose essentially stops registering the fragrance even though it's still there.

The fix: step outside for a few minutes and come back in. You'll almost certainly smell it again. This isn't a product problem — it's just how your nose works.

2. The Fragrance Has Fully Evaporated

Wax melts work by releasing fragrance oil as the wax heats up. Once all the fragrance oil has evaporated, the wax itself is completely odourless — it will stay liquid and look exactly the same, but there's nothing left to release.

If your wax has been melting for several hours over multiple sessions and the scent is genuinely gone, it's time to swap it out. A good quality wax melt cube should give you roughly 8–12 hours of scent throw total across multiple uses.

3. Your Warmer Runs Too Hot

This one surprises a lot of people. A warmer that runs too hot actually burns off the fragrance oil faster, giving you a shorter scent throw rather than a longer one. Lower and slower is better for wax melts.

If you're using a light bulb warmer, try a lower wattage bulb. Electric warmers vary a lot in temperature — if yours runs very hot, it may be shortening the life of your wax melts significantly.

4. The Room Is Too Large

Wax melts are best suited for small to medium-sized rooms. In a large open-concept space, the fragrance disperses too quickly to build up to a noticeable level. If you're trying to scent a large area, try using two warmers in different spots rather than expecting one cube to do all the work.

5. Low Fragrance Load in the Wax Melt

Not all wax melts are made the same. The amount of fragrance oil used in the formula — called the fragrance load — varies a lot between brands. A wax melt with a low fragrance load will smell faint right out of the package and fade quickly once melted.

At Scents by Shaizy, we use a high fragrance load in every batch, which is why our wax melts tend to have a stronger, longer-lasting scent throw than many mass-produced options. Our handcrafted wax melts are made in small batches in Ontario, Canada so every cube is consistent.

6. The Wax Type Matters

Soy wax has a lower melt point than paraffin, which means it releases fragrance more gradually and evenly. This is generally considered a better experience — a steady scent throw rather than a quick burst that fades fast. If you've been using paraffin-based melts and switching to soy, the scent may seem softer at first, but it tends to last longer.

Quick Checklist: Is Your Wax Melt Actually Done?

  • Step outside for 5 minutes and come back — can you smell it now? (Nose blindness)
  • How many hours has this cube been melted total? (8–12 hours is typical)
  • Is your warmer very hot to the touch? (May be burning off scent too fast)
  • Are you trying to scent a large open space? (Try a second warmer)

If you've worked through the list and your wax melts consistently underperform, it may simply be time to try a higher-quality formula. Our wax melts are a good place to start — customer favourites like Monkey Farts and Dreamy Dragon are known for strong, lasting scent throw.
