Not All Candles Are Created Equal: My (Slightly Chaotic) Journey to the Perfect Candle

🕯️ The First Candle That Changed Everything

I still remember the first candle I ever made. It wasn't perfect—far from it, actually—but there was something magical about watching that wick flicker to life, knowing I had created it with my own hands. That moment sparked an obsession that would transform my home into what looked like New Year's Day, every single day.

✨ When My Home Became a Testing Lab

If you had walked into my house during those early days, you would have thought I was preparing for the world's biggest celebration. Candles everywhere. Literally everywhere. I was testing hundreds of jars, different types of wax, countless wicks, and more scents than I can count. My family probably thought I'd lost my mind!

But I was on a mission. I wanted to understand everything about what makes a truly great candle. And let me tell you, it was a journey of trial, error, and a whole lot of melted wax.

💡 The Tunneling Mystery—Finally Solved!

Here's something that blew my mind: remember how candles always seemed to tunnel when you burned them? You know, when the wax burns down the middle but leaves all that wasted wax on the sides? I dealt with that my entire life and just accepted it as normal.

But during my candle-making journey, I finally learned WHY this happens and HOW to fix it! It all comes down to the first burn. This is something I now preach to every single one of my customers because it's so important:

The First Burn Rule: When you light your candle for the first time, let it burn until the entire top surface melts into a pool of wax that reaches the edges of the container. This usually takes 2-6 hours depending on the candle size. This creates a "memory" for your candle, and it will continue to burn evenly for its entire life.

If you don't do this, the candle will only burn as wide as that first burn pool, creating that frustrating tunnel. All those years of tunneled candles—finally explained!

🌡️ The Secret to Perfect Scent Throw

One of the biggest lessons I learned was about temperature and timing. You can't just melt wax and throw fragrance in whenever you feel like it. There's a science to it!

I discovered that the consistency of the wax before adding scent is absolutely crucial. If the wax is too hot, the oils can burn off or break down. Too cool, and they won't bind properly with the wax. Getting it just right—that perfect temperature and consistency—is what ensures you get that beautiful, consistent scent throw throughout your entire space.

After countless tests (and yes, many failures), I finally nailed the perfect process. Now, when you light one of my candles, the scent fills your room evenly and beautifully from the first burn to the last.

🔬 Hundreds of Tests, One Perfect Formula

Testing hundreds of combinations of jars, waxes, wicks, and scents taught me something invaluable: not all candles are created equal. The difference between a cheap candle and a quality one isn't just about price—it's about understanding the science, respecting the craft, and refusing to cut corners.

Every jar I tested taught me about heat distribution. Every wick showed me how burn patterns work. Every wax type revealed its unique properties. And every scent combination helped me understand scent layering and throw.

💜 Why I'm So Passionate About Sharing This Knowledge

Now, when I talk to my customers, I can't help but share everything I've learned. I want you to get the absolute most out of every candle you buy. I want you to understand why that first burn matters, how to trim your wick properly, and why the quality of ingredients makes such a difference.

Because here's the truth: you deserve candles that burn beautifully, smell amazing, and create the perfect ambiance in your home. Not candles that tunnel, smoke, or lose their scent halfway through.

🏠 From My Home to Yours

Every candle we make carries all those lessons learned from my home looking like a perpetual New Year's celebration. It carries the knowledge of why candles tunnel and how to prevent it. It carries the perfect wax-to-scent ratio that I worked so hard to achieve.

When you light a Scents By Shaizy candle, you're not just getting a product—you're getting years of testing, learning, and perfecting the craft. And that makes all the difference.

Because not all candles are created equal. And now you know why. 💕
