What Makes a Wax Melt Highly Scented?
You've probably noticed that some wax melts fill a room instantly while others barely register. The difference isn't random — it comes down to a few specific factors that determine how strong and long-lasting a wax melt's scent throw will be.
Here's what actually matters.
1. Fragrance Load
Fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance oil used in the wax melt formula. It's the single biggest factor in scent strength. A wax melt with a 6% fragrance load will smell noticeably weaker than one made with 10% or more.
Mass-produced wax melts often use lower fragrance loads to cut costs. Small-batch makers who prioritize scent throw — like we do at Scents by Shaizy — tend to push the fragrance load as high as the wax can hold without compromising the texture or burn quality.
2. Fragrance Oil Quality
Not all fragrance oils are equal. Cheaper fragrance oils often contain more filler and less of the actual aromatic compounds that create scent. They may smell strong in the bottle but fade quickly once melted.
Higher quality fragrance oils have a better scent profile, last longer when heated, and tend to smell more true-to-life rather than synthetic. 3. Wax Type
The type of wax used affects how fragrance is released when heated:

- Blended waxes are formulated to combine the best properties of different wax types for optimal scent throw and texture.

4. Warmer Temperature

The sweet spot is a warmer that melts the wax slowly and evenly. Lower-wattage electric warmers and tea light warmers with proper ventilation tend to give the best results.
5. How Fresh the Wax Melt Is
Fragrance oil can slowly evaporate even before a wax melt is used, especially if it's been stored in a warm environment or left unwrapped for a long time. Fresh wax melts stored in a cool, dry place will always perform better than ones that have been sitting around for months.
